I get asked this question a lot! You dream of a photo session where your little one digs into the cake, tastes that frosting and gets the biggest smile on her face, encouraging her to dig into the cake and make the biggest, most glorious mess, resulting in the BEST PHOTO SESSION EVER!!! This is what all mom and dads imagine right? Ok…so this does happen but not all the time!

Most babies haven’t had any sugar yet…or anything that sticks to their fingers like frosting. This can lead to a baby that wants absolutely nothing to do with the next taste, let alone any more pictures. This can be super defeating for the parents who had this amazing vision in their mind. They want to remember this moment. The joy, the smiles of tasting their first bite of cake!

The session can go as planned, however! It just takes a little bit of practice. I always suggest to get a small cake or cupcake and put your little sweetheart on the floor with the cake in front of them. Clap and smile and encourage them to play with the cake and take little tastes of it. Even if you have to do this a couple times that week, it makes the session go so much better! They will know what to expect and will be ready to have some fun!

This is the prep guide that I send to mom and dad before every session. And let’s not forget mom and dad! At the session, you will get frosted! So make sure to wear clothes that aren’t super fancy during the cake smash part. If you are getting family pictures as well, we do those right before cake smash so bring a change of clothes! You CAN get the session you always envisioned! It just takes a little bit of practice eating cake and who doesn’t want to do that?!
